Indigenomics Institute Launches National Indian Act Economics Campaign

The Campaign comes in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Indian Act and is designed to move Canada beyond symbolic reconciliation and into measurable economic change

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Indigenomics Institute is pleased to introduce the National Indian Act Economics Campaign, an invitation for Canadians to engage in discussion, connection, and reflection on how Canada’s economic system has been shaped by, and continues to be impacted by, the Indian Act. April 12 marks 150 years since the Act came into effect.

This Campaign will begin with a national public call to participate in the National Indian Act Economics Survey — inviting contributions that reflect on the experience of the Indian Act across Indigenous Nations, businesses, institutions, investors, and Canadians. The survey will be available on April 30 and is for individuals, organizations, associations, industry associations, business, corporations, Indigenous Nations, Indigenous businesses and governments.

This national Indian Act Economics Campaign brings this economic architecture into focus. It serves to name the experience and perspective of Indian Act economics, advances its measurement, and creates space for a national dialogue on its impacts and implications. It invites a broader understanding of how Indian Act economics continues to shape Indigenous participation in Canada’s economy.

“Canada, it is time to talk about Indian Act economics,” said Carol Anne Hilton, Founder of the Indigenomics Institute and author of The Rise of Indigenous Economic Power: Deconstructing Indian Act Economics. “Canada cannot claim a functioning economy while Indian Act economics remains in place. Indian Act economics is the foundation of the Indigenous socio-economic gap today.”

In response, the Indigenomics Institute has also launched Indigenomics AI, the world’s first Indigenous economic intelligence platform, designed to move beyond Indian Act economics. In centering this Campaign, Indigenomics AI is critical economic infrastructure that brings Indigenous economic growth and strength into focus. It makes Indigenous economic power visible, measurable, and actionable- transforming Indigenous economic data into intelligence that drives economic participation, partnerships, and investment at national and global scale.

“This is economic testimony,” Hilton added. “It creates space to engage with the real economic experience of Indian Act economics. We invite participation in shaping how Indian Act economics is understood across Canada. It is time to have this conversation.”
