Former Homeland Security Appointee Joins The Nuclear Company to Expand Global Presence

Douglas Smith named Global Head of Public Affairs, Managing Director for Middle East

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Nuclear Company, which is leading fleet-scale deployment of nuclear power across America and pioneering the modernization of nuclear construction, today announced the hiring of The Honorable Douglas A. Smith, former Assistant Secretary for the Private Sector at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. As Global Head of Public Affairs and Managing Director for the Middle East, he will oversee The Nuclear Company’s international public affairs and business engagements with a particular focus on the Middle East and Southeast Asia. In this role, he will lead The Nuclear Company’s growing presence in those regions, which are rapidly investing in nuclear power as a cornerstone of long-term energy security and decarbonization.

At the Department of Homeland Security, Smith became a central figure in strengthening its global business engagement, championing public-private partnerships to support a more resilient and secure America. He helped shape a unified approach to global risk, emphasizing collaboration with the business community to protect critical infrastructure while promoting economic vitality.

“Douglas brings a keen understanding of how America’s long leadership in nuclear technology is at risk as China continues to outpace America in building nuclear reactors,” said The Nuclear Company President & Chief Financial Officer Jason Thompson. “The Nuclear Company is America’s deployment platform for nuclear, working to deliver gigawatt-scale nuclear both expeditiously and economically.”

Despite the need for nuclear’s firm, clean baseload power, the biggest challenges facing the industry are that nuclear projects are almost always over budget and behind schedule. The Nuclear Company is working with Palantir and developing NOS, the first AI-driven, real-time software system built exclusively for nuclear construction. NOS will transform the construction of nuclear reactors into a data-driven, predictable process, enabling The Nuclear Company to build plants faster and safer for less.

Smith joins The Nuclear Company from premier international alternative asset manager Orchard Global, where he played a key role in advising on geopolitical risk and strategic communications. With more than 30 years of leadership at the highest levels of both the public and private sectors, Smith brings unmatched experience to The Nuclear Company’s expanding global operations and strategic policy engagement.

“Rebuilding America’s leadership in nuclear power is not just a national security priority, it’s a strategic imperative for maintaining our global economic position,” Smith said. “The Nuclear Company’s bold vision and technology-first approach is what’s needed both domestically and abroad to achieve the nuclear renaissance that’s so crucial to addressing the world’s surging energy demand.”
