Allergies Acting Up? Experts Warn Pests Could Be to Blame

The National Pest Management Association shares tips on pest-related health triggers during National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month

FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Allergy season is intensifying across the U.S., impacting more than 100 million Americans, and it’s not just pollen causing these symptoms. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) is joining the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) throughout May to remind homeowners that common household pests such as cockroaches, rodents and dust mites can trigger allergic and asthmatic reactions, along with tips on how to minimize their threat.

“Many Americans don’t realize that pests have a serious impact on their health, including worsening allergies and asthma,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at NPMA. “Reducing exposure to pest allergens is an important step in helping families breathe easier and maintain a healthy, pest-free home.”

Exposure to pest allergens causes sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes and in severe cases, difficulty breathing. “Cockroach droppings, saliva and shed skin, in particular, have been linked to increased asthma attacks in children,” added Fredericks. “While regular cleaning and home maintenance helps, only a qualified pest control professional has the tools and expertise to properly identify and eliminate hidden pest threats to protect your health and home for the long run.”

NPMA recommends the following prevention tips to help protect against allergy- and asthma-triggering pests:

  • Seal cracks and holes in walls, floors and foundations to prevent pest entry.
  • Keep food in airtight containers and promptly clean up crumbs and spills.
  • Regularly dispose of garbage and implement routine dusting.
  • Fix moisture issues such as leaky pipes and clogged drains, which attract pests.
  • Vacuum frequently using a HEPA filter to remove allergens.
  • Schedule regular pest inspections with a licensed pest control professional.
