UPMC Goes All-In on Abridge, Scaling AI Platform Enterprise-Wide

More than 200 health systems are using Abridge to power the future of intelligence at the point of conversation.

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--UPMC is expanding Abridge enterprise-wide, cementing a longstanding partnership forged in Pittsburgh that has scaled from a small pilot to thousands of clinicians using Abridge to document the care they deliver to millions of patients each year.

Abridge, the leading ambient AI platform for clinical conversations, was co-founded by Dr. Shiv Rao, a practicing cardiologist at UPMC. This moment brings the story full circle: a clinician-founded company that started with a vision inside UPMC will now serve more than 12,000 clinicians across the system by 2026. UPMC’s reach includes more than 40 hospitals and 800 outpatient sites across Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, and internationally.

UPMC's expansion is part of a broader movement across more than 200 health systems embracing Abridge to power the future of intelligence at the point of conversation.

“At UPMC, we adopt technology that solves problems. The reason Abridge has scaled so rapidly is because we have clinicians validating the output. Abridge provides accurate notes, freeing our clinicians to fully connect with patients in the exam room while saving time charting in the evenings,” said Chris Carmody, senior vice president and chief technology officer at UPMC. “From this scientifically rigorous, validated foundation, we will continue to innovate new ways to improve downstream workflows for clinicians, patients and the health system more broadly.”

Abridge is live at UPMC in over 44 specialties, including oncology, OB/GYN, cardiology, and neurology. The partnership has been particularly transformational in pediatrics, where clinicians have adopted Abridge because of how it fits into real-world workflows at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

“In pediatrics, we often have to retrofit technology designed for adult patients into our specialized workflows, but this is not the case with Abridge,” said Dr. Srinivasan Suresh, chief medical information officer at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. “We’re already seeing operational benefits with accurate, compliant notes and reduced administrative burden, and we’re excited about what the future holds.”

Before co-founding Abridge, Rao was an executive vice president at UPMC Enterprises, the innovation, commercialization, and venture capital arm of UPMC. UPMC Enterprises was an original investor in Abridge in 2018 and one of the first hospital systems to pilot the technology.

"From day one, this has been a deeply personal journey," said Dr. Shiv Rao, CEO and co-founder of Abridge. "It is an immense privilege to see Abridge integrated and in use at the system where I trained and see patients. We’ve come so far, and I can’t wait to go deeper as we transform the healthcare experience at the point of conversation.”
